Hungary opposes the European Commission's (EC) plan to phase out Russian gas by 2027. This was announced on May 6 by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto, commenting on the new initiative of Brussels.

The Foreign Minister pointed out that such actions violate the sovereignty of the European Union (EU) countries, as because of this, states will not be able to choose a source of energy. According to Szijjarto, these measures are aimed at supporting Ukraine's accelerated accession to the EU. He believes that other states, including Hungary, will have to pay for this decision.

"We refuse to do this. We refuse to pay the price for unjustified and immeasurable subsidies to Ukraine. We are not ready to pay the price for Ukraine's ultra—fast accession to the European Union," Szijjarto said, the video message was broadcast on his Facebook page (owned by Meta Corporation, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

Earlier in the day, Reuters reported that the EC would propose banning new gas agreements with Russia and existing spot contracts by the end of 2025. In turn, Bloomberg informed about the EC's plans to publish a roadmap for eliminating imports of Russian fossil fuels by 2027.

Alexey Pushkov, head of the Federation Council's Information policy commission, said on April 14 that the EU's boycott of energy supplies from Russia had long since lost its meaning. According to him, it had previously led to a lack of economic growth in Germany, the closure of a number of enterprises and serious financial losses for the whole of Europe.
