Russians talked about their coffee preferences
Latte, Americano and cappuccino are the leaders in the ready—to-drink coffee category, accounting for 29% of sales for each of these drinks. But raf turned out to be the least popular — only 1% of buyers choose it. This is stated in a study by analysts of the X5 Club loyalty program, who analyzed sales among visitors to Pyaterochka and Crossroads. The results were reviewed by Izvestia on May 7.
In Russia, residents prefer to drink instant coffee at home, while on trips they choose coffee drinks. Instant coffee accounts for 88% of all sales, while only 6% of consumers buy ground coffee, and only 3% buy grain coffee.
The main group of coffee buyers are young people between the ages of 18 and 29, who account for 62% of sales. People aged 30-40 years make up 20% of buyers, while Russians over 41 years old make up only 18%.
In 2024, Russians purchased 412.4 million packages of coffee, which is 8% more than in 2023. Instant coffee sales increased by 9%, especially in the Volgograd (+35%) and Sverdlovsk (+20%) regions.
Ground coffee became more popular, its sales increased by 7%, while Omsk (+19%) and Novosibirsk (+17%) regions showed the greatest growth. Grain coffee also saw an 8% increase in sales, especially in Volgograd (+23%) and Krasnoyarsk (+21%).
But cocoa and hot chocolate are losing demand: in Novosibirsk (-18%) and Omsk (-17%) regions they are bought much less. The exception is Volgograd, where cocoa sales increased by 24%.
Analysts note that Russians are gradually switching to grain coffee, giving up sugary drinks like cocoa.
Earlier, on April 23, internist, cardiologist of the Sberbank Health medical company Tatiana Simonova told Izvestia about the benefits and harms of coffee for the body. According to her, a natural custard made from Arabica or robusta beans is considered a useful coffee option, since these varieties are rich in antioxidants that help protect body cells from premature aging.
