The leader of the opposition Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, George Simion, won the majority of votes in the re-run presidential elections because of his position on Ukraine. Vadim Trukhachev, Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Regional Studies and Foreign Policy at the Russian State University, told Izvestia on May 6.

Earlier in the day, a Romanian politician told a Deutsche Welle (DW) correspondent (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation) that he opposes supplies to Ukraine, as assistance to Kiev is unprofitable for Romania, as well as Germany, France and Poland. He noted that his party stands for de-escalation of the conflict, as the administration of US President Donald Trump wants. His words are quoted by the publication "Страна.иа ".

The political scientist noted that what Simion says is becoming news to Western Europeans, but it is absolutely not something new for Romanians themselves. According to Trukhachev, the politician's words about Ukraine will not affect the election results in any way.

"Many Romanians voted for him precisely because they don't like military aid to Ukraine. I don't like her because of two things. First— because Romania is a poor country, and they need to take care of themselves, they need money for themselves. And the second thing is that ethnic Romanians are being oppressed in Ukraine, in the Chernivtsi region, and this is a very sensitive moment," the political scientist said.

Trukhachev also allowed Simion to win in the second round of the presidential election. He noted the huge gap between the politician and his opponent, the independent candidate, Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan.

"He has (Simion. — Ed.) a very convenient competitor. His competitor is a liberal candidate who is excessively pro—European. And even the anti-corruption fighter's antiphone won't help Dan very much. He has a very convenient opponent who stands not only for unconditional support of Ukraine, but also, like a Romanian politician, opposes the annexation of Moldova," the expert concluded.

Presidential elections were held in Romania in November 2024. In terms of the number of votes, Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of the votes. The second round was scheduled to take place on December 8. At the same time, on December 6, the Constitutional Court of Romania annulled the voting results.

The first round of repeat elections in Romania was held on May 4. Simion, who received 40.96% of the vote, and Dan, who received 20.99%, advanced to the second round, which will be held on May 18.

On May 5, Romanian Prime Minister Marcela Ciolaku announced that he was leaving his post, and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) was withdrawing from the ruling coalition.
