The decision on payments for illegal migrants from the United States who will leave the country on their own is an image gesture by US President Donald Trump. Konstantin Blokhin, a leading researcher at the RAS Center for Security Studies and an American political scientist, told Izvestia on May 6.

"This $1,000 is a way to legitimize Trump's actions. It's such an image gesture," he said.

The political scientist added that in this way the US president is trying to justify his migration policy and "disown" various accusations, for example, of racism.

"It is unlikely that this decision will lead to a solution to the problem of illegal migrants. They spend all their accumulated resources to get to the United States. And, most likely, these acquired resources exceed $ 1 thousand. I think that, of course, they will not come back voluntarily," he noted.

Blokhin said it was too early to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the migration policy pursued by the new White House administration. As the political scientist noted, in three months the American leader could create a follow-up plan, but the real effect of them can be assessed much later.

In addition, the expert stressed, the forces opposed to Trump will try to hinder his policy.
