Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico promised to assist in the reconstruction of monuments erected in the republic in honor of the soldiers of the Red Army. This was announced on May 6 by the Social Democratic party SMER, which is headed by Fico.

"I want to offer you cooperation in the restoration of other monuments and sacred sites that recall the decisive role of the glorious Red Army not only in the liberation of Slovakia and Czechoslovakia, but, above all, in the Second World War itself," the head of government said in a video released by the party.

He added that Slovaks remember where freedom came from.

The Prime Minister made this statement during a visit to the Central Military Memorial Cemetery of the Red Army in the Slovak city of Michalovce.

On April 15, Fico announced that he would visit Moscow to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Victory, despite the prohibitions of the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, Kai Kallas. The politician added that he would fly to Russia to pay tribute to the thousands of Red Army soldiers who died during the liberation of Slovakia, as well as the millions of victims of the Nazi regime.
