Friedrich Merz, leader of the alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU), has been nominated for a second vote in the German chancellor's election. This was announced on May 6 by the leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary faction, Jens Spahn.

"We, the coalition of the CDU/CSU and the SPD (Social Democratic Party of Germany. — Ed.), we will nominate Friedrich Merz again for the second vote. The CDU/CSU parliamentary group has just given him a standing ovation for a long time. We will enter the second round of voting together," he said.

According to him, it is currently being clarified when the second round of voting may take place — in a few days or earlier. Shpan stressed that this is possible only with the consent of other groups.

Earlier in the day, Friedrich Merz did not get enough votes to be elected Chancellor of Germany in the first round. 310 members of parliament voted for his candidacy, 307 voted against, and three more abstained.

Later, the Bild newspaper reported that Merz decided to abandon the second round of the chancellor's election on May 6. This information was also confirmed by CDU Secretary General Carsten Linnemann.

Alice Weidel, co-chairman of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, in turn, called on Merz to resign and call new elections. According to the politician, the electoral failure showed how fragile the formed coalition of the future new government of the CDU/CSU and the SPD is.
