- The Federation Council accused Merz of intending to create a Fourth Reich from Germany.

Friedrich Merz, the leader of the alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU), intends to remilitarize Germany and turn it into the Fourth Reich. This was announced on May 6 by the head of the Federation Council Commission on information policy, Alexei Pushkov.
According to him, the memories of World War II and responsibility for the heinous crimes of the Third Reich are gradually being erased from the memory of German citizens. However, he added that half of the population still has this memory.
"It is precisely the memory deficit that Merz and politicians like him are counting on, intending to remilitarize Germany and turn it into the Fourth Reich," Pushkov wrote on the Telegram channel.

On the same day, the head of the Leftist party, Jan van Aken, said that Merz was unable to unite Germany. According to him, a man who cannot even unite his own supporters within the party is unlikely to unite the entire population of the country.
During the Bundestag elections on May 6, Merz did not get enough votes to be elected Chancellor of Germany in the first round. A total of 621 people voted, and one ballot was invalid. As a result of the calculation, it turned out that 310 members of parliament voted for Merz's candidacy, 307 voted against, three abstained.
Later, the Bild newspaper reported that Merz decided to abandon the second round of the chancellor's election on May 6.
