Scholz called the failure of the vote to elect Merz chancellor absurd.
Outgoing Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) Olaf Scholz, in an interview with Stern magazine on May 6, said that he did not expect an unsuccessful outcome of the vote to elect Friedrich Merz, leader of the alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU), as head of the country's government.
"No, that's absurd," Scholz replied, answering the question of whether he had expected such a result.
It is noted that Scholz is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), with which the CDU/CSU bloc led by Merz has formed a coalition.
As Stern points out, Scholz looked agitated after the Bundestag vote. He also took part in a meeting of the SPD faction after the elections.
According to the politician, the incident should be considered a reason for joy. At the same time, he expressed confidence that the situation could be fixed. It is specified that Scholz will serve as German Chancellor until the election of a new head of government.
Earlier, on May 6, Merz did not get enough votes in the Bundestag elections to be elected Chancellor of Germany in the first round. As a result, the meeting was suspended. A total of 621 people voted, and one ballot was invalid. As a result of the calculation, it turned out that 310 members of parliament voted for Merz's candidacy, 307 voted against, three abstained.
