There are MPs within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) who do not support the formation of a new coalition in this composition, for example, some CDU members would like to form a coalition with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Gunnar Lindemann, a member of the Berlin Senate from the AfD, told Izvestia on May 6.

"Yes, it is obvious that there are some dissenters in the CDU or the SPD who would not like to have this coalition. We have already heard from several CDU deputies that some CDU deputies would prefer to enter into an alliance with the AFD in order to pursue a conservative policy towards Germany, rather than this left—wing policy of the SPD," Lindemann said.

According to him, the AFD is ready to negotiate the possible formation of another coalition with the CDU, but without Friedrich Merz as chairman of the CDU.

On May 6, it became known that Friedrich Merz could not get the 316 votes needed to be appointed Chancellor of Germany, he managed to gain the support of only 310 members of the Bundestag. A little later it became known that the second vote would not take place on the same day. The Bundestag now has 14 days to hold new elections. If the results of the second round do not determine the chancellor by an absolute majority, then in the third round the candidate who wins a relative majority of the votes of the members of the German parliament will be able to head the government.
