Ukraine's hasty admission to the European Union (EU) would be a bad deal, because this country would be a burden to the community. This was announced on May 6 by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Orban, commenting on the calls of the leader of the European People's Party (EPP) Manfred Weber for Ukraine's early accession to the EU, said on the social network X (former. Twitter) that Budapest's accession to the EU was beneficial for all member states, including Berlin, while Kiev's accession would be a mistake.

"Joining Ukraine is not a good deal. Ukraine is not an added value, but a burden," the Prime Minister said.

He also clarified that it would be a serious mistake to send European funds to Kiev, rather than to support its own economy, and stressed that it was time for EU leaders to start defending the interests of their peoples.

Orban said on May 4 that Budapest's position on Kiev's accession to the European Union would depend on the opinion of the Hungarian people, and not be determined by Kiev politicians. This is how he responded to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, who condemned the prime Minister's blocking of Ukraine's membership in the EU, calling his actions "extremely dangerous" for the bloc.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on March 10 that the Hungarian government still considers Ukraine's accession to the EU dangerous, but is ready to represent any position of its citizens on this issue in the international arena.
