Friedrich Merz, the leader of the alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU), who did not get the necessary number of votes in the first round of elections for the post of Chancellor of Germany, must resign and call new elections. This was stated on May 6 by Alice Weidel, co-chairman of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

"We (the AFD party — ed.) are ready to assume the responsibility of the government and can only call for common sense to prevail. Mr. Merz must leave immediately and pave the way for new elections in our country," the politician said.

She noted that the failure of the vote in the German Chancellor's election showed how fragile the formed coalition of the future new government of the CDU/CSU and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) is.

"Merz is the first candidate for the post of German Chancellor who failed in the first round of voting. This shows the weak foundation on which the small coalition between the CDU/CSU and the SPD, which the voters voted for, is being built," Weidel wrote on her Facebook page. Twitter).

During the Bundestag elections on May 6, Merz did not get enough votes to be elected German Chancellor in the first round. A total of 621 people voted, and one ballot was invalid. As a result of the calculation, it turned out that 310 members of parliament voted for Merz's candidacy, 307 voted against, three abstained.

After that, the Bild newspaper reported that Merz decided to abandon the second round of the chancellor's election on May 6. This information was also confirmed by CDU Secretary General Carsten Linnemann.
