The media reported on the refusal of the new German government to supply Taurus to Kiev.

The coalition agreement of the future German government, which was signed by the alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), does not mention the possibility of supplying German Taurus cruise missiles to Kiev. This was reported on May 6 by the Ukrainian edition "Страна.иа ".

It is noted that the section on Ukraine states that Berlin intends to continue to support the country's aspirations to join the European Union (EU) and the NATO bloc, as well as provide financial and military assistance. At the same time, assistance to Kiev may come from frozen Russian assets, among other things.

The German government also intends to provide "material and political guarantees of security" to Ukraine. Thus, the missile supply clause did not appear in the agreement, although CDU Chairman Friedrich Merz has repeatedly stated that he supports the supply of these missiles to Kiev.

Merz's decision is not supported by his junior coalition partners.

On April 14, Merz announced its readiness to transfer Taurus missiles to Ukraine, subject to coordination with European partners. Alexey Didenko, head of the State Duma Committee on Regional Policy, told Izvestia that the words of the candidate for chancellor of Germany are a provocation and "adding oil to the fire." He noted that this statement is rather strange given the efforts currently being made to resolve the conflict in Ukraine and de-escalate it.

After that, on April 16, Bloomberg wrote that Merz's statement had exacerbated the differences between the country's parties. The missile dispute is a sign that the center—left and conservative parties "will not be able to smooth over their differences easily," the newspaper noted. On April 19, Markus Zeder, Prime Minister of the German federal state of Bavaria and leader of the CSU party, said that Germany itself needs Taurus cruise missiles, just like drones and its own anti-missile shield.
