- The media pointed to the lack of interest of European businesses in rejecting gas from the Russian Federation
The European Commission's (EC) plan to completely abandon Russian energy sources by 2027 may not arouse widespread interest among European businesses. This was reported on May 6 by the Politico newspaper, citing sources.
The document, which the European Commission plans to submit on Tuesday, provides for the possibility of early termination of contracts for the supply of Russian energy resources. According to European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen, the plan is designed to "help the EU regain its energy independence from Russia."
However, as the newspaper notes, large European companies may not be "necessarily so interested" in implementing these initiatives. Some of them are already considering the possibility of resuming full-fledged gas imports from Russia as soon as it becomes legally and politically acceptable.
Maria Shagina, an expert at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, said that "the continued attraction to Russian energy resources is due to several considerations," including concerns about competitiveness and deindustrialization in the EU countries.
A day earlier, Bloomberg reported that the European Commission (EC) intends to propose a ban on gas imports from Russia by the end of 2027. It was clarified that European countries are going to take this measure because they seek to sever relations with Russia, which was once their largest energy supplier.
On April 17, the EU decided to postpone the ban on the import of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). The decision was made due to the resistance of some governments and uncertainty about alternative sources.
Alexey Pushkov, head of the Federation Council's Information policy commission, said on April 14 that the EU's boycott of energy supplies from Russia had long since lost its meaning. He noted that the abandonment of Russian fuel has already led to a lack of economic growth in Germany, the closure of a number of enterprises and serious financial losses for the whole of Europe.
