The European Commission (EC) will propose banning new gas agreements with Russia and existing spot contracts by the end of 2025. This was reported on May 6 by the Reuters news agency, citing three European officials familiar with the situation.

It is specified that the European Commission will publish a roadmap on how it plans to stop importing Russian fossil fuels by 2027.

"The roadmap will include a commitment to propose in June a ban on new Russian gas import transactions and spot contracts by the end of 2025," the material says.

In addition, according to Reuters, the card will include an obligation to make a legal proposal to ban the import of gas, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), from Russia under existing contracts by the end of 2027.

The day before, the Reuters news agency reported that the European Union (EU) is unlikely to be able to terminate contracts for the supply of Russian gas, despite attempts to explore the legal possibility of such a step. In particular, it will be difficult for Brussels to present the current situation as force majeure due to Russia's commitment to its obligations under gas contracts.

Earlier, on April 17, it became known that the EU decided to postpone the ban on the import of Russian LNG. The decision was made due to the resistance of some governments and uncertainty about alternative sources.
