The countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) are considering the possibility of creating structures to counter security threats and combat crime. This was stated on May 6 by SCO Secretary General Nurlan Yermekbayev in an interview with RIA Novosti.

"The parties are discussing the creation of a number of SCO structures to counter security challenges and threats, information security, and the fight against international organized crime and the drug threat," he said.

The Secretary General stressed that the SCO members are confident that improving the effectiveness of the organization's work will help strengthen ties between the member states and enhance regional security.

Yermekbayev added that the organization's member countries are actively developing cooperation in various fields, which contributes to peace and development both at the regional level and on a broader scale.

In July last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin named the security of the SCO member states as one of the SCO's priorities. According to the Russian leader, the approved program of cooperation in the field of combating separatism and extremism in the SCO space will also contribute to this task.
