Sales of new passenger cars in Russia increased by a quarter in April

Sales of new passenger cars in April 2025 in Russia amounted to 101.4 thousand units (cars under the age of three years are taken into account). This is 25% less than in the same period last year, but 28% more than in March this year, according to a report published on May 5 by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.

In the segment of light commercial vehicles, sales in April decreased by 16% (9.8 thousand units), trucks — by 58% (4.6 thousand units), buses — by 52% (1.1 thousand units). At the same time, compared to March of this year, sales of passenger cars increased by 28%, light commercial vehicles — by 16%, buses — by 20%. The cargo market decreased by 5% in a month.

In total, 404 thousand new cars were sold in the Russian Federation in January-April of this year, which is 27% less year-on-year. The market for new cars of domestic production amounted to 219 thousand units, which is 9% less than in January-April 2024. The market volume in the passenger segment was 346.4 thousand units (-26% compared to the same period last year), in the light commercial segment — 34 thousand units (-16%), in the cargo segment — 20 thousand units (-49%), in the bus segment — 3.6 thousand units (-54%).

In April, the rate of decline in sales of domestic models remained lower than that of foreign cars, the Ministry of Industry and Trade noted. During the month, 51.5 thousand imported cars were sold (40% less than in April 2024) and 65.2 thousand Russian-made cars (-12%). The overall market growth was noted by 25% compared to the previous month. The share of Russian equipment in January-April 2025 increased by 10 percentage points compared to the same period last year.

On April 30, it was reported that in the second spring month of this year, Russians were most often interested in new cars in the price segment from 1.5 million to 3 million rubles. The top five most popular models here are Lada Vesta, Haval Jolion, Moskvich 3 and two Chery models: Tiggo 4 Pro and Tiggo 7 Pro Max.

On April 29, it became known that according to the results of the first three months of 2025, stocks of new passenger cars in warehouses in Russia remained virtually unchanged and amounted to about 500 thousand units. In the first quarter, sales of new passenger cars in the Russian Federation amounted to 247 thousand units, during the same period 256 thousand new cars were imported into the country.
