- More than 50% of Spaniards consider the European Union ineffective in the face of global challenges

More than half of Spanish residents consider the European Union (EU) ineffective in solving global problems. This was reported on May 5 by the newspaper El País, citing survey data.
According to the publication, 58.8% of respondents expressed this opinion. Among the key problems, Spanish residents identified immigration, inequality and poverty, economic growth and competitiveness, military and trade conflicts. The respondents also stated the importance of the EU investing in housing policy, technology, industry and social policy.
Against the background of the possible imposition of duties by the United States, more than 79% of respondents agreed on the need to stimulate domestic production in order to reduce their economic dependence. Almost 75% also supported the search for alternative trading partners, about 66% of respondents believe that retaliatory duties should be imposed on products from the United States.
Earlier, on April 24, Georgy Ostapkovich, director of the HSE Center for Economic Research and Economic Analysis, said that there are risks of a large-scale financial and economic crisis in the EU due to rising prices, inflation and tightening monetary policy. According to him, such a situation can first cause stagnation, and then escalate into recession.
