US President Donald Trump said on Monday, May 5, that he had had "very good conversations" about the Ukrainian conflict and a possible meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

As Trump told the press on board his plane, a possible face-to-face meeting with the Russian leader could take place in Saudi Arabia, where he will visit in the near future.

At the same time, he flatly refused to answer questions from a Wall Street Journal reporter. He also called the publication "rotten" and accused it of working for China.

Prior to that, on April 29, Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin was easier to deal with than Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky. He clarified that he was trying to end the conflict, but Ukraine wanted more weapons and security guarantees from the United States.

On April 27, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that negotiations with the United States on the conflict in Ukraine were moving in the right direction. He recalled that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, among other things, expressed the opinion that during the negotiations Washington better understood Moscow's position, as well as the underlying causes of the conflict.
