During a telephone conversation with his Pakistani counterpart, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed Russia's readiness to help resolve the situation between India and Pakistan. This was reported on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry on May 4.

They noted that Lavrov and Dar discussed aspects of bilateral cooperation between Russia and Pakistan, and also paid special attention to the strained relations between New Delhi and Islamabad.

"The Russian side emphasized its readiness to contribute to a political settlement of the situation <...> if Islamabad and New Delhi have a mutual desire," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Relations between India and Pakistan have worsened after the terrorist attack on April 22 near the Indian city of Pahalgam in the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 27 civilians. Both countries have closed the only common open land border and suspended visas. New Delhi has also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty.

On April 29, Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced India's intention to launch military attacks on the country within 24-36 hours. According to him, any act of aggression will be met with a decisive blow.

On May 2, Lavrov, together with his Indian counterpart Subramaniam Jaishankar, also discussed the aggravation of Indian-Pakistani relations. The Russian Foreign Minister called for a settlement of the differences between New Delhi and Islamabad based on the provisions of the Simla Agreement of 1972 and the Lahore Declaration of 1999.
