It is necessary to pass on the memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War to the younger generation, Russian Consul General in Sydney Zarina Gabieva told Izvestia on May 4.

She said that on this day, an action "Immortal Regiment" was held on Sydney's Martin Place Square, which was joined by several hundred people.

According to the Consul General, the event was held in a friendly and warm atmosphere. The march was accompanied by songs of the war years, people actively shared stories of their native times of the Second World War. In addition, a large number of young people and children took part in the action, Gabieva noted.

"The memory of the immortal feat, heroism and courage of those who earned victory for us at the cost of their lives will live on as long as we keep it in our hearts. Our duty is not to lose the truth about the Victory and pass it on to the next generations," she stressed.

Ksenia Lorber, a member of the Youth Council of Russian Compatriots, also pointed out the need to pass on the memory of the exploits of WWII heroes from generation to generation.

"Every year we hold events and participate [in them] so that our generation knows who was behind the victory and whose victory it was," she said.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that in Cologne, Germany, participants in the Immortal Regiment rally marched in the uniforms of Soviet soldiers on the eve of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Wartime songs were performed at the event and a Victory Day rally was held.
