US President Donald Trump has announced that he is not going to run for a third term. On May 4, the American leader said this in an interview with NBC News.

"So many people want me to do this. I've never had such insistent requests like this one. <… > But I'm not going to do that. I want to spend four wonderful years and hand over the board to someone, ideally, a great Republican, so that he can continue this," he shared.

Trump also added that he does not intend to interfere in the selection of a future successor to the post of head of state. At the same time, he singled out the candidacy of Vice President Jay Dee Vance, calling him "fantastic" and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who, according to the American leader, is doing an excellent job.

However, Trump clarified that it is too early to talk about this at the moment.

On March 31, Trump said that he had not yet seriously considered the possibility of running for a third term, but was receiving requests from people to do so. At the same time, he added that he would like to compete with former head of state Barack Obama in the elections. Prior to that, the president had stated that there were ways to achieve a third term for him, but it was too early to think about it now.

The Daily Mail newspaper reported on March 30 that the American leader has the opportunity to remain in power until 2037 due to a loophole in the 22nd amendment to the country's Constitution. As specified in the article, this possibility arises due to discrepancies in the interpretation of this amendment: it prohibits re-election only for a president who has been elected twice, but does not regulate the situation of returning to office in the event of the resignation or death of another president.
