The traumatologist spoke about the safety rules for children during the May holidays

On May 4, Alexander Sautenko, Head of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics at the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital of the Russian Ministry of Health, told Izvestia how to reduce the risk of childhood injuries during the holidays.

According to him, even infants cannot be transported in a car in their arms, since the specific weight of a child increases greatly at the time of an accident. For example, in a collision at a speed of 40 km/h, the weight can increase 35 times.

"Parents often think it's convenient, and nothing terrible can happen. But official statistics show that the risk of injury to children, including fatal injuries, is more than doubled if a locking device is not used during their transportation," the doctor noted.

He stressed that the principles of transporting children are strictly regulated by the rules of the road, and even if the trip is short, the child still needs to be fixed in a car seat.

"It is important not only to use some kind of device and a locking device, but it must also be suitable for the child according to his age and weight. This should not be neglected. <...> Depending on the age, smaller chairs can be used, such as boosters, bassinets," Sautenko said.

He added that upon reaching an older age, a child can be transported without additional locking devices, but it is mandatory to fasten him with seat belts.

Locking devices significantly reduce the severity of injuries, therefore, in the absence of a locking device, the risk of death in an accident is much higher, the expert concluded.
