In old age, four types of physical activity can ensure good health: aerobic, strength training, balance exercises, and stretching. This opinion was expressed by Kirill Prosdaev, a geriatrician, gerontologist, MD, in an interview with Gazeta.Ru" on Saturday, May 3rd.

He explained that aerobic exercise has a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system. According to him, regular exercise such as running, swimming or cycling reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Exercises for muscle development are the prevention of loss of muscle mass with age, called sarcopenia.

Balance training helps reduce the risk of injury, bruises, and fractures. This is especially important for the elderly, because the structure of bone tissue changes with age: the likelihood of serious injury increases, and bone will heal much slower than in young people.

"With age, for various reasons, the risk of falls increases, and the ability to balance may be lost," he said.

According to Proschaeva, it is also necessary to engage in stretching exercises from time to time, because with age, the tissues of ligaments and tendons lose elasticity.

"It's important to move every free minute. For example, you can take the stairs to the fifth floor instead of the elevator, walk through the "extra" trolleybus stop, and put the trash can in the office as far away as possible," the doctor concluded.

Earlier, on April 30, Proshchaev reported that in conditions of social isolation, elderly people have a significantly increased risk of developing cognitive problems. To maintain the cognitive functions of the brain, it requires constant stimulation, and communication is one of the most effective methods.
