Europe has begun developing new sixth-generation fighter jets due to doubts about the supply of F-35 from the United States. This was reported on Saturday, May 3, by the American magazine Newsweek, citing sources.

According to the publication, the reason for the decision was the criticism of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, regarding the North Atlantic Alliance.

Due to the desire to reduce dependence on the United States, NATO members from Europe have become motivated to get involved in programs to create new fighters.

"Doubts about the advanced American F-35 fighter jets, caused by President Donald Trump's harsh criticism of NATO, are causing increasing interest in the nascent sixth—generation fighter programs," the newspaper writes.

Prior to that, on May 3, it was reported that Trump might not come to the NATO summit, which will be held in June.

Earlier, on March 19, NBC News learned that the United States was considering giving up command of the North Atlantic Alliance forces in Europe.

On March 6, NBC News announced that the American leader was considering changing the format of the United States' participation in NATO. It is specified that this will mean a significant departure from the basic principle of the alliance.
