Former National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has angered US President Donald Trump over his close contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the US administration's policy towards Iran. This was reported on May 3 by The Washington Post (WP).

"Waltz was apparently in close contact with Netanyahu regarding options for military action against Iran ahead of the meeting between the Israeli leader and Trump in the Oval Office," the newspaper writes about Netanyahu's February visit to Washington.

It is noted that the national security adviser wanted to come to a decision that did not suit the American president, "because the United States was trying to find a diplomatic solution."

Waltz tried to tip the scales in favor of military action and cooperated with the Israeli side, WP clarifies, citing representatives of the American administration.

On May 1, it was reported that Waltz left the post of National security adviser to the president. It is indicated that Waltz's deputy Alex Wong and other employees of the National Security Council also left the administration.

On the same day, Trump announced that he would appoint his adviser Waltz to the post of Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations (UN). The duties of the national Security Adviser will be temporarily performed by the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
