The decision of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Counterintelligence) of Germany to recognize the Alternative for Germany (AfG) party as a right—wing extremist is a step towards the authoritarian restructuring of German society. This was announced on May 3 by the leader of the Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice party, Sarah Wagenknecht.

"The parties of the self—proclaimed democratic center have been promoting the authoritarian restructuring of our society for years," she said in an interview with the DPA news agency.

According to Wagenknecht, the authorities exert pressure on "undesirable political forces by undemocratic means" and restrict freedom of speech.

The day before, it was reported that the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution of Germany classified the AfD as a right-wing extremist organization threatening democracy in the country. According to the authorities, this step reduces the obstacles to monitoring the party with the help of special services and allows for better control of its activities.

In turn, on May 3, the lawyers of the AFD called the agency's decision illegal and demanded that the counterintelligence withdraw it. Otherwise, lawyers will advise the party's leadership to file a lawsuit, the Bild newspaper said.
