US President Donald Trump may not attend the NATO summit in June. Spiegel informed about this on May 3.

According to the publication, the new US ambassador to the North Atlantic Alliance, Matthew Whitaker, has previously said that this could happen. He also stated the requirement of the United States related to the obligation of all members of the association to spend 5% of GDP on defense.

"At first, the Germans believed that the Americans did not mean these 5% seriously, that this was just a negotiation tactic. But now they take Whitaker at his word," the publication clarifies.

Earlier, on March 19, NBC News reported that the United States was considering giving up command of NATO forces in Europe.

NBC News said on March 6 that Trump was considering changing the format of the United States' participation in NATO. It is specified that this will mean a significant departure from the basic principle of the alliance. Later, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Washington would not withdraw from the military bloc.
