The United States and Israel are close to an agreement on the resumption of humanitarian supplies to the Gaza Strip without the control of the Palestinian radical movement Hamas. This was announced on May 2 by the Axios portal portal, citing sources.
"The United States, Israel and representatives of the new international fund are close to an agreement on how to resume the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in Gaza without control from Hamas," the publication says.
In order to resume deliveries, they came up with a mechanism that would avoid the looting of humanitarian aid by Hamas representatives. So, for this purpose, operations will be carried out through an international fund, which will be supported by national states and charitable companies. Humanitarian organizations and "prominent international figures" will act as the heads of the new fund.
"Several residential complexes will be built in the Gaza Strip, and citizens will be able to visit them once a week to receive one package of assistance per family, which will last for seven days," the newspaper reports.
At the same time, the Israeli side promises to finance and carry out large-scale engineering work within the framework of the project, and the American side will be responsible for ensuring security in and around humanitarian centers.
It is specified that representatives of the United States and Israel hope to resume humanitarian supplies after the visit of the President of the United States Donald Trump to the enclave, which is scheduled in two weeks.
Earlier in the day, CNN reported that the Freedom Flotilla coalition ship, carrying humanitarian supplies for the Gaza Strip, began to sink as a result of a drone attack off the coast of Malta. It is specified that there are 30 people from different countries on board the ship.
On April 20, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the country would not end the war in the Gaza Strip until it returned the hostages and destroyed Hamas. According to him, the radical movement demands an end to the war, the preservation of its power and the restoration of Gaza with the involvement of capital, which will allow it to rearm and prepare new attacks on Israelis.
