Trump proposed suspending most of the US contributions to the UN structures

In the draft federal budget for 2026 dated May 2, American leader Donald Trump proposed suspending most US contributions to the World Health Organization (WHO), UNESCO and other UN structures, including all voluntary transfers. The relevant document was published on the White House website.
"The budget suspends most mandatory and all voluntary contributions to the United Nations and other international organizations, including the UN budget, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Health Organization," the draft says.
It is specified that these measures are proposed in accordance with the presidential decree on the review of support for international organizations. In total, it is planned to reduce expenditures on the relevant budget line by more than $1.7 billion compared to 2025.
A day earlier, WHO Assistant Director General for Administrative and Financial Support, Raul Thomas, said that the organization would not be able to pay its employees about 25% of salaries in 2026 and 2027 due to the termination of American funding. At the same time, the organization still does not know how many employees it will have to cut due to financial problems.
