- The UN is concerned about information about the torture of Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine

The UN Committee against Torture has expressed concern about reports of ill-treatment of Russian military personnel held captive by militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This is stated in the institute's report on the results of studying the situation in Ukraine.
"He (the committee. — Ed.) concerned about reports containing allegations of torture, <...> abuse, threats, humiliation <....> in relation to Russian prisoners of war, who were allegedly committed by the Ukrainian armed forces," the document says.
In addition, the UN body drew attention to reports of an insufficiently thorough investigation of the crimes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and nationalist battalions committed during the fighting in Donbass since 2014.
"The Committee emphasizes that the prohibition of torture is non-derogable, <..."and no special circumstances <...> can be invoked to justify torture," the report says.
Earlier, on December 31, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) published a report on the situation in Ukraine from September to November 2024. According to the document, 24 out of 25 Russian prisoners interviewed in Lviv said they had been tortured or ill-treated during the year.
