Law enforcement agencies have detained a suspect in an arson attack that burned down 100 hectares of forest in the Trans-Baikal Territory. This was announced on May 2 by the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Irina Volk.
The fire occurred near the village of Burgen, Chita region, where the fire spread to trees due to the burning of dry grass. It was possible to eliminate the open gorenje only on the third day, said the Wolf.
"On the eve of the fire, a local resident visited his hayfields and deliberately set fire to the dry grass around the winter quarters and in the field. Having lost control of the fire, the man left without informing anyone about the disaster," the official representative of the department wrote on her Telegram channel.
According to her, the damage caused by the actions of the attacker is estimated at 152 thousand rubles. A criminal case has been opened against the man under Part 4 of Article 261 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Destruction or damage to forest plantations").
The suspect was given a preventive measure in the form of a written undertaking not to leave. He faces a fine of 1-3 million rubles or imprisonment for up to ten years with a penalty of 300-500 thousand rubles, concluded Volk.
Earlier, on April 28, it was reported that investigators in Transbaikalia had opened three criminal cases on negligence that led to the development of forest fires, and had begun to clarify the causes of the fire, the extent of the damage caused and the possible shortcomings of officials.
On April 7, the Governor of the Trans-Baikal Territory, Alexander Osipov, declared an emergency regime in the region due to forest fires. According to him, almost all fires in forests since the beginning of the year have been caused by humans.
