Former South Korean Prime Minister Han Dok-soo has announced his intention to run in the presidential election. This was reported by Yonhap on May 2.

It is specified that Han Dok-soo made this statement in parliament a month before the early elections, which will be held on June 3.

According to the agency, the former prime minister promised to amend the country's Constitution in order to shorten the term of office of the president and use his experience in the economy to solve problems in the trade sector.

"I will do everything in my power to be chosen by our people in the upcoming presidential elections," Han Dok—soo is quoted as saying in the publication.

Prior to that, on May 1, Han Dok-soo announced his resignation from the post of acting president of South Korea, putting an end to talks about his possible participation in the elections.

Early presidential elections in South Korea are scheduled for June 3, 2025. The country's Constitutional Court approved the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol on April 4. Han Dok-soo was appointed acting head of state.

The situation in South Korea escalated on December 3 last year after the president declared martial law, which was caused by the threat of paralysis of power that arose due to attempts to conduct impeachment proceedings. The head of state was arrested for 48 hours on January 15, 2025, and then detained. The arrest warrant for Yoon Seok-young was lifted by the court on March 6.
