Fraudsters began luring Russians to issue "virtual cards" on Telegram in order to allegedly pay for purchases abroad and subscriptions to foreign services. This was announced on Friday, May 2, by Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, federal coordinator of the Digital Russia party project.

According to the deputy, the attackers convince Telegram users to get a "virtual card", which is a "safe and convenient solution." In addition, scammers promise to create an account in the near future and sometimes even receive bonuses.

"Registration usually requires "minimal" information: name, phone number, and sometimes passport information, depending on the legend of the scammers," Nemkin explained in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Using the information they receive, fraudsters give the victim the details of actually non-existent cards, and in return they get access to real bank data under the pretext of "replenishment" or "linking".

Earlier, on April 29, experts from F6 (a developer of technologies to combat cybercrime) told Izvestia that the attackers had come up with a new fraud scenario on the eve of Victory Day, which uses the brand of the Defenders of the Fatherland state fund. So, they created websites that posted false messages about the launch of a "social project" with an offer to earn up to 30 million rubles "using the resources and capabilities of Russia."
