As a result of the earthquake that occurred in Istanbul at the end of April, at least 4.2 thousand buildings were damaged. This was announced on May 1 by Murat Kurum, Minister of Urban Development and Environment of Turkey.

"We checked 36,425 buildings, of which 4,295 received minor damage, the rest were not damaged," the IHA news agency quoted him as saying.

The Minister also stressed that the damage assessment from the natural disaster is still ongoing.

The head of the Turkish Ministry of Health, Kemal Memisoglu, announced on April 23 that almost 240 Turkish citizens were injured in the earthquake in Istanbul. Most of the injuries were caused by falling from a height, as many residents tried to escape amid the panic.

On the same day, the first 3.9-magnitude tremors were recorded at 12:13 p.m. (local time, coincides with Moscow time) off the coast of Istanbul's Silivri district. The depth of the earthquake was 6.99 km. Aftershocks followed the earthquake.
