Acting Pentagon Inspector General Stephen Stebbins has expanded the scope of the investigation into US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth after the leak of classified data in the Signal messenger. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Thursday, May 1.

The investigation, in addition to the first leak discussing strikes against the Houthis, will also aim to identify who posted confidential military information on an unclassified chat group that included Hegseth's family.

"The Pentagon Inspector General is focused on finding out who took data from a government system designed to store highly classified information and put it into the Signal application," the material says.

The scandalous publication of The Atlantic magazine discussing attacks on the Houthis by the US administration became known on March 25. Jeffrey Goldberg, the magazine's editor-in-chief, said that on March 11, he received a request to connect to Signal from a user named Mike Waltz. Two days later, Goldberg received a notification about being added to a group chat called "Houthis small group."

The New York Times reported on April 20 that Hegseth had sent detailed information about the US Military strikes in Yemen to the Signal messenger chat, which also included his wife Jennifer, brother Phil, and lawyer Tim Parlatore. As indicated in the media, he shared the same data in a scandalous chat in which the editor of The Atlantic appeared.
