Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced 18 detainees on suspicion of involvement in large-scale fires. His statement on May 1 is quoted by the online newspaper The Times of Israel.

"At the moment, we have detained 18 arson suspects, one of whom was caught in the act," Netanyahu said during a speech in Jerusalem.

The fire caught fire in several places in parallel — this raises suspicions of a terrorist act, the causes of the fire are being investigated, said Nikita Kulyukhin, a correspondent for Izvestia, who is at the scene.

Firefighters' work continues along the entire perimeter of Jerusalem and the road between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, he added. According to the journalist, due to the hot climate, the fire may flare up again. Many settlements in the mountains near the fires were evacuated and still cannot return home, due to the fact that the resumption and spread of the fire cannot yet be predicted, Kulyukhin stressed.

In turn, Dmitry Gendelman, adviser to the Office of the Israeli Prime Minister, said that the operation to eliminate the fire is coordinated from a joint headquarters involving the fire and rescue service, the police and the army.

"More than 110 fire brigades, with the support of fire aviation, continue to fight the fire, which is still spreading in seven different locations," he wrote on his Telegram channel.

A large-scale fire near the Mesilat Zion settlement in the Jerusalem Mountains became known the day before. The fire subsequently spread to other areas: the Canadian Park, Neve Shalom, Mitzpe Harel, Highway No. 3. The Israeli Government has asked Italy, Croatia, Bulgaria, Greece and Cyprus for help in extinguishing the fire.
