The European Union (EU) is considering the scenario of maintaining sanctions against Russia, even if the United States lifts them. This was stated on Wednesday, April 30, in an interview with the Financial Times by the head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas.

The diplomat said that Brussels "has a plan B", which involves maintaining assistance to Kiev and economic pressure on Russia.

"We see signs that [the United States] is considering abandoning Ukraine and trying to reach an agreement with the Russians, because it turned out to be difficult," she said.

According to her, the EU is also preparing an action plan in case the United States withdraws from negotiations on a peaceful settlement.

On April 25, the Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Sergei Shoigu, announced that sanctions against Russia had not prevented the growth of its trade. He noted that the Russian economy has grown by 4.1% over the past two years. The volume of foreign trade maintained a positive trend.

Prior to that, on April 24, Maxim Chirkov, associate professor of the Department of Economic Policy and Economic Measurements at GUU, said that the economic losses of the European Union (EU) due to the sanctions confrontation with Russia already amount to trillions of dollars and the situation continues to deteriorate. According to the expert, the European authorities will eventually be forced to reconsider their position.
