Ukraine 's accession to NATO would mean an escalation of tension, the deputy speaker of the republic's parliament, Tibor Gašpar, said in an interview with Izvestia.

"There is a question of its membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, and this is a completely different matter. Because I understand that both the Russian Federation and the European Union want guarantees of peace. And Ukraine's joining the North Atlantic alliance would mean an escalation of tension," Gaspar told Izvestia.

At the same time, the politician did not rule out Ukraine's membership in the EU.

"I don't want to speak for other countries, but I think that Ukraine could definitely become a member of the European Union if it continues to exist safely and make important decisions," Tibor Gašpar said.

The full version of the interview will be published on May 1 at 00:01.

Earlier it became known that the Hungarian authorities initiated a referendum on Ukraine's membership in the EU. On April 10, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo said in an interview with Izvestia that Ukraine should never join NATO because Kiev's membership in the alliance poses a threat to the world that it cannot even imagine.
