Arterial hypertension (hypertension) is a common and dangerous disease that requires careful attention and constant monitoring. Otherwise, serious complications may develop over time, up to life-threatening ones, Anastasia Malai, cardiologist at SM Clinic, warned in a conversation with Izvestia.

So, according to her, without proper monitoring and treatment, hypertension increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, in particular, heart attack.

"One of the most serious complications of hypertension is myocardial infarction. High blood pressure leads to an overload of the heart, which can cause its hypertrophy (an increase in muscle mass) and a decrease in work efficiency. This leads to ischemia (lack of oxygen) of the heart muscle and, as a result, to a heart attack," warned Malai.

In addition, hypertension significantly increases the risk of stroke, both ischemic (due to a blood clot) and hemorrhagic (due to a ruptured vessel). High blood pressure can damage blood vessels in the brain, leading to their blockage or rupture.

Target organs are also under attack, as the doctor noted. In particular, as already mentioned, high blood pressure leads to cardiac hypertrophy and can also cause heart failure, a condition in which the heart cannot pump blood efficiently.

"High blood pressure can damage the blood vessels in the kidneys, which impairs their ability to filter blood and can lead to chronic kidney failure," the specialist continued.

In addition, hypertension can damage the retina of the eye, leading to the development of hypertensive retinopathy. In advanced cases, this can lead to vision loss.

The doctor noted that the arteries are also at risk. Chronic high blood pressure contributes to the development of atherosclerosis, a condition in which fatty deposits form on the walls of the arteries, which leads to their narrowing, loss of elasticity and increases the risk of thrombosis.

However, people with hypertension often experience various symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath, and sleep disturbances. They can significantly worsen the overall quality of life and negatively affect the psycho-emotional state.

Summarizing all the above, the doctor reminded that arterial hypertension requires timely diagnosis, disease control and competent treatment. And, last but not least, awareness of the risks on the part of the patient and respect for their health.

"Regular blood pressure checks, a healthy lifestyle, and following doctor's recommendations will help reduce the risk of hypertension and its complications," Malai emphasized.

Earlier, on January 29, Natia Chekhoeva, a gastroenterologist and endoscopist at the Gastro Clinic, told Izvestia that the systematic consumption of excess calories inevitably overloads the body. This not only increases body weight, but also puts a strain on internal organs, including the heart, liver, and pancreas.
