Cravings for spicy food are common, with both physiological and psychological causes. In addition, the desire to eat a spicy dish may indicate the needs of the body. However, it is important to remember that excessive consumption of spicy food can harm the body. This was told by the gastroenterologist of JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg clinic), Candidate of Medical Sciences Evgeny Belousov.

He explained that from a physiological point of view, the desire to eat spicy food is explained by the action of capsaicin, the active ingredient of pepper. This substance irritates the receptors, causing a burning sensation, in response to which the body produces endorphins— pleasure hormones. This creates a positive reaction and a desire to repeat these feelings. In addition, spicy food temporarily speeds up the metabolism, which is perceived as a surge of energy.

The gastroenterologist noted that psychological reasons are no less important. For many, spicy dishes are associated with pleasant memories or cultural traditions. Some people use spicy food as a way to deal with stress — the vivid taste sensations help to distract from their worries. In cultures where spices are an integral part of cuisine, their consumption becomes a habit. A peculiar dependence on acuity may also develop, when over time more and more intense stimulation of the receptors is required.

According to the expert, cravings for spicy food can signal the body's needs. In some cases, this indicates a deficiency of B vitamins (especially B6 and B12) or minerals (for example, zinc). Another possible explanation is the need for sensory stimulation when regular food feels bland.

"Maintaining a balanced diet and a conscious approach to your diet will help you better manage these cravings and make your culinary preferences more diverse and healthier. Excessive consumption of spicy food can cause problems with the gastrointestinal tract," Belousov warned.

To reduce cravings for spicy food, he recommends first making sure that the diet contains all the necessary macro- and microelements. You need to add more fruits, vegetables, proteins and healthy fats. It is better to reduce the amount of spiciness in food gradually, replacing spicy dishes with less spicy ones, but using various herbs and spices.

It is important to explore other taste profiles — sour (lemon juice), sweet (honey), bitter (Brussels sprouts). A conscious approach to nutrition will help you track down when and why there is a craving for spicy food. You should avoid using food as a way to deal with stress, the specialist recommended.

Earlier, on April 26, a consultant psychologist with additional specialization in the field of eating disorders, Tatiana Zakharova, told Izvestia about the effect of food on human mood and psyche. According to her, the key influence on the mental state is not a specific set of foods, but a person's ability to correctly recognize signals of hunger and satiety, as well as meet the needs of the body.
