On April 30, Estonian MP and leader of the Conservative People's Party (EKRE) Martin Helme spoke out against the intention of Prime Minister Kristen Michal to send military personnel to Ukraine as part of the peace forces.

"No, no, and no again! Not a single Estonian soldier can be sent to Ukraine," Postimees newspaper quoted Helme as saying.

He promised to initiate the procedure for the resignation of the government even before the Cabinet of Ministers requests a mandate from the Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia) to send military personnel to Ukraine.

"This is a step that will lead to the outbreak of conflict with Russia," the MP added.

Helme stressed that Estonia cannot afford to lose a single soldier, a single weapon system or a batch of ammunition.

On the same day, Michal announced that Estonia was ready to send a company of soldiers to Ukraine as part of a "coalition of the willing." The Prime Minister added that before sending the soldiers, the government intends to obtain an appropriate mandate from the Riigikogu. He also stressed that Tallinn still considers granting Ukraine membership in NATO to be the best guarantee of its security.
