Constant wearing of rings without proper care can lead to loss of their original appearance and luster. Even the most durable diamonds fade over time, and gold products become covered with plaque if they are not cleaned regularly. Anna Lardo, a gemologist and founder of the Lardaux jewelry company, told Izvestia about this on May 3.

According to her, household chores pose a particular danger to jewelry. Cleaning without gloves leads to a soap coating on the gold rings and damage to the enamel. White gold with a rhodium coating gradually turns yellow, and the use of metal sponges leaves scratches on the surface of the jewelry.

Vacations can also turn into problems for jewelry. Chlorine in the pool has an aggressive effect on gold, and the high temperature and humidity in the sauna or steam room contribute to tarnishing the metal and the appearance of stains.

It's not just aggressive substances that are dangerous. Seemingly harmless cosmetics — creams, foundation, nail polish remover — leave streaks on the gold. Even regular soap, if used frequently, can damage jewelry. It is especially difficult to remove dark spots from iodine — this will require professional polishing from a jeweler.

"Before going to the gym, it is recommended to leave the rings at home or in the locker room. It's not just about safety — dumbbells, barbells and other sports equipment leave scratches and dents on the precious metal. If a ring is made of white gold and coated with rhodium, the fluid released by the body can accelerate its abrasion, and diamonds can tarnish due to the accumulation of sebum," Lardo warned.

Proper storage is equally important for the preservation of jewelry. Open caskets, decorative trays and metal holders are not suitable — sunlight and lamps cause oxidation of gold, especially when in contact with other metals. The best option is individual suede pouches, where the rings are removed after wiping with a soft cloth. Jewelers recommend professional jewelry cleaning once a year.

Earlier, on April 24, experts from Sokolov and the Scandinavian Health Center (SKZ) told Izvestia how to recognize jewelry allergies and which materials are suitable for those who suffer from allergic reactions. According to her, it is important to distinguish between a real allergy and the usual irritation from friction. Allergic reactions are characterized by itching and swelling, and with mechanical irritation, a person feels discomfort and stinging of the skin.
