On April 30, Russian Deputy Defense Minister and Head of the Main Military—Political Directorate of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Army General Viktor Goremykin, said that European countries were resisting the desire to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

"Europe, led by the leaders of Great Britain and France, is actively resisting the desire for a Ukrainian settlement," Goremykin said, speaking at the III International Anti—Fascist Congress held at the Patriot Convention and Exhibition Center. His words are quoted by TASS.

According to Goremykin, at the recent Paris summit, European leaders discussed increasing pressure on Russia, as well as the possibility of sending NATO deterrence forces to Ukraine as security guarantees for Kiev. In addition, he expressed concern about the plans of the European Union (EU) to implement a five-year program of large-scale rearmament.

Goremykin also stressed that such a development is unacceptable for Russia and it "will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of citizens."

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on April 29 that Moscow negatively assesses Berlin's subversive role in exacerbating the conflict in Ukraine.
