The doctor called drugs dangerous for children for adults

A child's body has significant differences from an adult, which must be taken into account during treatment. Many medications that are safe for adults may pose a threat to a child's health. That is why the prescription of drugs should be handled exclusively by a doctor, since self-medication can lead to serious consequences. This was announced on Tuesday, April 29, by Olga Tatarkina, a pediatrician at the SM Clinic for Children, in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».
As the doctor explained, medications are absorbed, distributed and excreted differently in children than in adults. This requires a special approach to the dosage, frequency of administration, and method of administration of medications.
So, some drugs are indeed allowed for use in children, but only in special forms and strictly calculated doses. However, Tatarkina urged in no case to try to identify them on their own. Many parents, avoiding a visit to the doctor, look for advice on the Internet, but such information is not always reliable, the doctor warned.
The specialist also noted that a number of medications have age restrictions. For example, the use of throat sprays in children under three years of age can cause respiratory tract spasm. Aspirin is particularly dangerous — its use to reduce fever in children under 16 years of age during viral infections can cause severe liver and brain damage, the pediatrician warned.
In addition, the doctor explained that tetracycline antibiotics are strictly contraindicated in children under eight years of age, as they disrupt the formation of bone tissue, which can slow down growth, as well as negatively affect the condition of teeth, leading to yellowing of the enamel. Children under the age of 14 should not be prescribed aminoglycosides because of the risk of serious hearing impairment — these drugs are used only in extreme cases when it comes to saving lives, the source told the publication.
In conclusion, the doctor advised the parents not to self-medicate. She recalled that prescribing any medications, especially for children, should be done only by a specialist.
On April 28, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced that the share of domestic vital medicines should grow to 90%. He noted that in order to provide high-quality medical care, it is necessary to have effective medicines manufactured in Russia. He believes that the main task is to make modern methods of prevention and treatment more accessible to the population.
