Pope Francis will be remembered by the people of Russia as an outstanding figure and man. This was announced on April 29 by Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia during a meeting of the UN General Assembly.

"Russia will always remember the late pontiff as an outstanding religious and statesman known for his many years of activity for the benefit of peace," the diplomat said.

Nebenzia noted that Francis sincerely tried to understand the reasons for the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, and also suggested ways to resolve it in a peaceful format.

"As a native of Latin America, Pope Francis, like no other, understood the importance of building a more just multipolar world and building international relations based on mutual respect and equality," he said.

Pope Francis died at the age of 89 on the morning of April 21 as a result of a cerebral stroke. He last appeared in public on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica during Easter celebrations on April 20. As previously reported, the pontiff has been struggling with bilateral pneumonia for a long time.

The conclave to select a new pope will meet on May 7. 135 cardinals under the age of 80 from around the world can take part in the conclave.
