Russia has a stronger position in negotiations with the United States on Ukraine. This opinion was shared on April 29 by former CIA officer Ray McGovern, answering a question from Izvestia after speaking at the federal educational marathon "Knowledge. The first ones."

"Now [US President Donald] Trump has yet to realize that he has weak cards in this card game and he only has a couple of aces, while Russia has a full house. If you play poker, then you know what it's about," he said.

McGovern noted that negotiations are always better than military action, although there are certain obstacles along the way.

"But there is also a strong enough will on the part of both leaders and there is an irresistible desire to achieve peace," the former CIA officer concluded.

Earlier, on April 28, White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said that Trump remains optimistic about resolving the conflict in Ukraine. According to her, the head of state stands for a permanent ceasefire, not a temporary truce.
