- The political scientist explained the leading positions of the liberals in the parliamentary elections in Canada

The Canadian Liberal Party is leading in the parliamentary elections due to the fact that its new leader Mark Carney correctly took advantage of the surge of patriotic feelings among the population after threats from American President Donald Trump. On April 29, American political scientist Malek Dudakov told Izvestia.
Parliamentary elections were held in Canada on this day. According to the latest data, the Liberal Party of the current Prime Minister Mark Carney is winning the election.
The political scientist recalled that back in early 2025, the Canadian Conservatives, led by Pierre Pouillevre, were the leaders of the election race, but then several significant events occurred at once: the resignation of unpopular Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was replaced by former Bank of England governor Carney.
"Secondly, Trump's inauguration took place, he began to threaten Canada's annexation to the United States as part of his rhetoric, and this caused a surge of patriotic feelings among Canadians, which Mark Carney took advantage of. He is trying to present himself as a technocrat who is able to fight back against Trump in all areas — both in economics and politics," Dudakov explained.
According to him, at the same time, the Canadian conservatives appeared as Trumpists, which is why their ratings sank. The Democrats can definitely remain in power in Canada for another three or four years, the expert admitted.
He added that the situation inside Canada remains quite deplorable — there are problems in migration and social policy.
"But now the main topic is for them (Canadians. — Ed.) — this is a confrontation with Trump. In the future, I think this surge of patriotism will fade gradually, Carney's ratings will go down, and by the end of the year he is likely to become quite unpopular," Dudakov suggested.
On April 28, Trump once again called on Canada to join the United States. He promised to contribute to improving the quality of life of the country's residents, strengthening the economy and defense potential.
On March 4, an increase in trade duties came into effect in the United States, for Canada, they amounted to 25%. On April 7, the Canadian side filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over US duties on cars and spare parts.
On April 26, the Canadian Prime Minister said that Trump had betrayed Canada when he launched a trade war against his "closest neighbor." He noted that the increase in duties is destroying the global economy. Back in March, Carney told reporters that Canada intends to reduce its economic dependence on the United States.
