The Indian Armed Forces have complete freedom in determining the method, objectives and timing of the country's response to the terrorist attack near the city of Pahalgam in Kashmir. This was announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 29.

"The armed forces have full operational freedom in making decisions about the ways, objectives and timing of India's response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam," the PTI news agency quoted him as saying.

In addition, Modi expressed full confidence in the professional capabilities of the country's armed forces.

On April 27, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said that the country has no plans to start a military conflict against India without escalation. Asif added that India would face a "more than proportional response" if it attempted to invade Pakistan or attack the country.

Relations between New Delhi and Islamabad worsened after the terrorist attack on April 22 near the Indian city of Pahalgam in the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 27 civilians. Both countries have closed the only common open land border and suspended visas. New Delhi has also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty.
