The May holidays are associated with increased risks: fires, tick bites, and domestic injuries. However, following simple safety rules and timely insurance will ensure a rest without unnecessary worries. Alexander Abramov, Executive Director of Sberbank Insurance, told Izvestia on May 1 how to protect yourself and your property.

According to Sberbank Insurance, more than 3.4 thousand insured events were recorded during the May holidays of 2024, and 32% of them were injuries. Most often, people received burns, cuts, bruises and sprains during outdoor activities or cottage work. The expert advised not to overload yourself with physical work, use serviceable equipment and keep an eye on children and pets so that they are not near open fires or unattended bodies of water.

"A small first-aid kit at hand will help you quickly deal with minor injuries. An insurance policy against injuries and accidents can provide additional protection: it will provide the necessary support and minimize financial costs in case of unforeseen circumstances," the specialist noted.

Incidents involving suburban real estate were in second place in terms of the number of complaints (28% of cases). Abramov recalled that the risk of fires increases in May, especially if you violate the rules of campfires. He clarified that with a high level of fire risk, the Ministry of Emergency Situations may impose a ban on the use of open fire even in private areas. If making a campfire is allowed, the expert advised keeping the barbecue at least 5 m away from the buildings, clearing the area of dry grass and always having extinguishing agents on hand. Additional protection, he said, will be provided by an insurance policy covering damage from fires, floods and other emergencies.

Abramov recalled that with the onset of heat, ticks become active, which can carry dangerous diseases. The specialist noted that in May 2024, 34% of all insurance policies against tick bites were issued, and 33% of requests for medical help for this reason also occurred this month. To reduce the risks, the expert recommended using repellents, wearing closed clothes in the woods and tall grass, and carefully examining yourself, children, and pets after walks. When a tick is found, he advised not to try to remove it yourself, but to contact the doctors immediately.

Earlier, on April 25, experts from the Cooper service told Izvestia how to protect themselves from mosquitoes and ticks. Experts noted that the signs of a tick bite may include redness, itching, swelling, as well as the appearance of a characteristic "ring" after a few days. The bite site is usually visible in the center of this ring.
