Lisbon is demanding that the Agency for Energy Regulatory Cooperation of the European Union (EU) conduct an independent investigation into the massive power outage in the country. This was announced on April 29 by Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro.

"We want to conduct a full investigation into the causes of the power outage," the Reuters news agency quoted him as saying.

The Portuguese Prime Minister clarified that his government expects quick, urgent responses.

Earlier in the day, the Europa Press agency announced the start of an investigation by a court in Spain into the causes of a large-scale power outage in order to find out whether it was an act of sabotage.

A large-scale power outage in Spain and Portugal occurred on April 28. It has affected the operation of public transport, power lines and telephone communications in parts of Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon. Later, Spanish and Portuguese media reported that specialists had begun work to restore power supply.

Later that day, the Portuguese electricity grid operator Ren cited a rare atmospheric phenomenon as the cause of the outage in the Spanish and Portuguese power grids. On April 29, the operator of the Spanish electricity grid, Red Eléctrica, announced that the electricity supply in Spain had almost completely recovered.
